Juliana (D&E) Fancy Stone Jewelry - Coral and Turquoise Matrix Cabochons

These gorgeous matrix style cabochons were first seen in the design books of D&E jewelry in 1969.  They were done in both turquoise and coral colorations.  These are glass cabochons not real turquoise or coral. There were a number of different pieces in the line that used these cabochons.  My feeling from seeing these different items from the line is that D&E could not consistently keep the exact same stone in stock.  So you will see variations (especially in the turquoise) in the exact color and speckling of the cabochon.  You will notice in the 3rd photo down that there is a lot of variation in the color of the main turquoise cabochon.  Some are much bluer than others.
There were two bracelet styles. The wide bracelet with a large cabochon at each link of the bracelet. You will notice that the wide bracelet adds in another fancy cabochon in navette shape.  It is a fluss style stone.  The narrower bracelet has smaller cabochons on each link but set sideways.

There were 3 necklace designs.  The bib with the large cabochon dangle.  You will notice that the bib dangle necklace adds in another fancy cabochon in navette shape.
It is a fluss style stone.  The collar necklace done with all smaller cabochons with looping rhinestones and the pendant look one with just a large cabochon dangle.

There is only one brooch design with a large center cabochon and very dimensional construction.

There are 4 different earring designs.  Two different dangle styles and two regular earring styles.  All are clips.  Some add in another fancy cabochon in navette shape.
Again just to remind everyone D&E did not have exclusive stones. You will find this stone used by other companies. You must use other characteristics to determine if an item is D&E.

This stone was also featured in my book Juliana Jewelry - The Last Generation on page 286 and 287.

D&E used other styles of turquoise and coral cabochons in later designs.  They are found in turtle designs and some Native American inspired items.

You can find many examples of this stone in the http://isitjulianajewelry.com database.

These designs can be purchase in my store at:
and all of my other great is also available there at: https://www.ourvintagerosejewelry.com/

D&E also used many smaller turquoise and coral cabochons in round and navette shapes and those are not featured in this blog. I hope to feature them at some point in the future.

Juliana (D&E) Fancy Stone Jewelry - Oval Painted Hibiscus Flower Cabochons

This is one of my favorite of the hand painted cabochons that D&E used.  It has a Hawaiian vibe to the painted flowers on it which I think are Hibiscus.  The flowers and leaves are molded into the stone and then they are hand painted in different colors. This stone appears to be
porcelain.

The rhinestone design using this stone was done in several different colorways including: pink/black, topaz/orange, and green/orange.  They made the full complement of jewelry including large collar necklaces, earrings, 5 link bracelets, clamper bracelets, and pin/pendants.

These stones were also used in a filigree metal design that has only been found in a pendant with a black base to the stone with yellow flowers.  This design was probably also made in other colors and probably also had at least matching earrings.

This stone is found in two sizes.  The large size was used in the brooches, pendants, clamper bracelets and necklaces.  The smaller size was used in the bracelets and earrings.

This stone was also featured in my book Juliana Jewelry - The Last Generation on page 303 in the green/orange and the orange/topaz coloration.  The filigree metal accent design was also pictured in my book on page 33.

Again just to remind everyone D&E did not have exclusive stones. You will find this stone used by other companies.  Hobe was one company that used this stone and used other colors of it yet to be found in D&E jewelry.  You must use other characteristics to determine if an item is D&E.  This choker necklace pictured is signed Hobe and is NOT D&E.
This is Hobe NOT D&E

You can find many examples of this stone in the http://isitjulianajewelry.com database.

These designs can be purchase in my store at: Juliana Painted Hibiscus Flower Jewelry
and all of my other great is also available there at: https://www.ourvintagerosejewelry.com/

Juliana (D&E) Fancy Stone Jewelry - Black Pear Painted Floral Cabochons

I have received many requests to do a series of posts about the fancy stones that Juliana (D&E) used in their jewelry.  An important note on this is you can NOT identify D&E jewelry solely by looking at the stones used.  D&E did not have exclusive stones. In almost every chapter of his book Mr DeLizza talks about the new stones they got for each year and who they purchased those stones from.  If I am ever not busy I would love to go through his book and make a list of the stones, where they came from and what year they started using them.  That would make for a fabulous resource.  If anyone else reading this blog has time that would be a fabulous contribution
to the history of Juliana Jewelry and I would love to host that information on my sites.

Great jewelry researcher Mary Ann Doctor Smith already went through Mr DeLizza's book and did a general dating of costume jewelry using the information in his book.  This resource can be found here: Dating Costume Jewelry

The stone we will talk first is a black pear shaped stone that was molded with inset flowers and leaves.  Those were hand painted in bright blue and red for the flowers and green for the leaves.  This stone measures approx. 18 x 13 mm.  This stone design is extremely rare in D&E Jewelry.  I have only seen a handful of these designs.

I have seen two different uses of this stone in D&E jewelry.  However there may be more styles using them and they are just not identified yet.

The first is the huge earrings done with the gorgeous painted pears along with blue and red oval plastic cabochons and small round jade glass cabochons. The metal on this design is gold toned. These earrings are almost 4 inches long.

The second is the black pear stones accented with orange, blue and olivine green rhinestones.  The metal on this design is darkened gun metal in color.

I have seen this design in the oval wreath shaped brooch.  The pendant necklace with the mesh chain, the dangle earrings and button earrings.

These designs can be seen and purchased in my store at: Our Vintage Rose - Black Painted Pear Jewelry

Juliana (D&E) Figural Musical Instrument and Note Jewelry

Available for purchase

Juliana (D&E) did a wide range of figural musical instrument and musical note jewelry.  Most are done as brooches but they also did pendant necklaces.  There are many different sizes and designs.  The largest one found so far is this guitar done in red and clear rhinestones with S scroll work.  Done as a pendant necklace.  It was found in the personal collection of Mr DeLizza.  It measures over 5 inches long.
Available for
Purchase

Another very interesting design is this Balalaika which is a Russian Musical Instrument.  It is done with a center dentelle bermuda blue surrounded by teal, aqua, olivine green, and blue rhinestones. It measures 2.6 inches long.
Available for Purchase

They also did this musical lute brooch done with green and AB rhinestones. The brooch measures 2.7 inches long.  It has been found in many colors.

D&E also did musical note brooches.  These are older designs so usually found in all clear.  This treble clef musical note brooch measures 2.5 inches.

An important note on this treble clef and most of the musical jewelry found in all clear is that they are brooches from the early days of D&E so do not have many of the traits we usually use to identify items as D&E.  There are many variations that are not D&E.  We only know which ones are D&E and which ones are not by keeping records of what Mr DeLizza said when identifying jewelry for us in the past. So on these it is very important to compare yours to the ones in the Is It Juliana Jewelry database and make sure the construction of yours matches exactly.
Left Harp is a Juliana Design, Right is Not
There are so many different musical designs.  Found so far are: guitar, harp, banjo, Clef, Mandolin, Lyre, Cello, Violin.  There are possibly more that have not been found yet.  Many of these musical figurals are found in a rainbow of colors and often more than one design of the same figural.

D&E musical brooches are located in the IsItJulianaJewelry database at:

Juliana (D&E) Fancy Stone Jewelry - Geode Designs

Geode with rhinestone surround
Juliana (D&E) made extensive use of these gorgeous stones usually called geode stones.  Of course they are really not geodes, they are molded glass in different colors, some with a iridescent finish on top.  They have been found in: several colors of pink, two colors of topaz, peach, clear with an iridescent finish, white with an iridescent finish, blue, and the purple/blue givre ones found so far only in the small size with the wired beads.

Geode with metal surround

It is important to know that D&E was not the only company to use these stones.  D&E did not have "exclusive" use stones.  They purchased stones from the same places as everyone else.  So when seeing a stone you must use other characteristics to determine if the item is D&E.

Another important note is that if D&E made a design in one color scheme most likely you will find the same design in many other color schemes using the exact same design.  So knowing the designs will help you when you see a new color to know that it is still D&E.
Geode with wired beads

So far identified as D&E are three different styles of geode designs.
1. Geode with rhinestone surround
2. Geode with metal surround
3. Small geode with wired beads

I also have an example of a NOT D&E geode pair of earrings.  You will note that the number of rhinestones in the surround is not the same as the confirmed D&E earrings.

My currently available geode designs can be found in my store: Our Vintage Rose Jewelry - Geodes

All items in my store can be seen at: https://www.ourvintagerosejewelry.com/

As always many geode designs can be seen in my online free educational database of Juliana Jewelry: http://isitjulianajewelry.com/
